Taster lunch at Koh

go-to-kohWe’ve featured Koh many times on this site, mostly with good things to say. It’s been open for two years now and it’s emerged as one of the best Thai restaurants in Dublin.

I went there yesterday for a celebratory lunch with my parents and two friends, and was immediately drawn in by a very tempting lunch offer. For €12, you can get three plates of “light bites”, with the selection including wrapped prawns, Vietnamese beef balls, Tom Yam Goong (Thai broth), Tom Kha Gai (another broth), and a gyoza selection. I opted for the chicken satay, ribs with hoi-sin glaze, and Vietnamese summer rolls (smoked Irish trout, rice paper, asparagus, and Japanese mayonnaise with a sweet chilli dip). The portions were substantial and more than enough for lunch.

dessertUnusually for an Asian restaurant, the desserts at Koh are spectacular, and they’re all on special at lunchtime. Try the warm, moist, and gooey chocolate brownie with a coffee, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, round off your meal with a mango and chilli cocktail: sweet and fruity with a spicy tang.

Jean has often recommended the Yamamori lunch deal, available just a stone’s throw from Koh on the north Dublin quays. I reckon this light bites lunch is just as good in its own right, and the amount of customers testifies to the quality of food and service at Koh.

Koh is decent value, but I wish that there were cheaper Thai food options in the city. I’m surprised some enterprising soul hasn’t opened a more affordable Thai eatery along Capel or Parnell Street; there’s a clear gap in the market here.
