Another interesting email about Tesco, this time from CheapEats reader Bill Gunter:
“I noticed more than a month ago that the Tesco at the Omni Park in Santry, Dublin was selling Epicure organic cannellini beans for €10.30 per tin. When I asked about they told me “if that’s what the price tag says then that must be what it costs.” I emailed Tesco corporate about it and they said that the price did indeed seem high and that the shop would take the beans off the shelves until the proper price could be determined. Two weeks later the beans are still on the shelf at the same price.
Last night I was in the Tesco in Clare Hall, Dublin and they’re selling Epicure organic mung beans for the same price! A friend contacted Epicure directly and their suggested retail price for the beans is €1.04 (this may be the non-organic price, though).
I was thinking that this was simply a data-entry error, but I’m not so sure now. Has anyone else found Tesco selling beans at a 10x markup?
